Buell Lightning, 2001, 1199 cm3, 27,000 km, Askola

A slightly rarer Buell X1. The bike is a bit of a mixed breed straight from the factory. The chassis is by Showa and adjustable front and rear. The brakes are the familiar and reliable Nissins, and the engine is borrowed from Harley-Davidson’s Sportster. But don’t worry, the power is not Harley-level: with Buell’s own heads and fuel system, and with a freer exhaust and filter, that lazy Sportster’s ~60 hp has been increased with the factory race ECU to as much as 95 horsepower! Without losing that familiar Harley torque! The bike pulls like a rocket and sounds like one too, thanks to the Wileyco silencer.

Imported to Finland in 2004 and from 2007 to 2026 it was with the same owner, who hardly rode it, judging by the rear tyre whose DOT marking is 09... (The deal includes new Metzeler Roadtec Z6 tyres, under the bike if I have time to fit them, but otherwise I recommend the buyer goes straight to have them changed after the sale).

Now in 2026 the bike has changed hands twice, first to the previous owner, who had done some customising, and then to me, who restored some of the modifications to suit my taste. Included are both original parts and these streetfighter-style custom parts. The last 3 photos show the bike’s different appearances; the last 2 photos show what it looked like when it came to me.

The bike is a joy to ride on both open roads and twisty roads, and it does not even use much fuel! Approx. 5 l/100 km, and I have not had any problems during my ownership (approx. 3,000 km)!

The primary and engine oils were changed approx. 4,000 km ago, and at the same time the battery and spark plugs were replaced!

Although the paint is a nice colour, it is clearly brush/painted on from a spray can up close.

The horn has not been refitted

The breather bottle is currently a plastic bottle

There is no lower fairing, because the previous owner’s homemade one vibrated itself apart.

The digital instrument cluster has now been removed and replaced with the standard one, with a slimmer 3D-printed bracket. Round handlebar-end mirrors have also been fitted; the buyer can choose between round and non-round mirrors. The original instrument cluster now shows 23,345 km and the digital cluster accumulated approx. 3,600 km, so the bike has covered approx. 27,000 km in total.

However, the electrics etc. are in standard condition, meaning connectors etc. have been replaced with new matching parts (Deutsch-DT). So no destructive bodges have been done.
