Mercedes-Benz 220, 1962, Pello

Here is a stylish, restored and very tidy W111-series Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb with low mileage from 1962. The car is museum-registered, its history is documented, and it has been restored twice over the years. Mercedeses from the W111 series are considered the factory’s last model series to feature a still significant share of hand-built production, and these cars have long been sought-after classics and collector’s items.

The car was sold new in Uppsala, Sweden, and registered in November 1962 to Anders Folke, who kept it for the first 20 years. It then changed hands for the first time, effectively moving into hobby use already at that point. Swedish inspection records show very modest annual mileage. The Mercedes was restored for the first time by J.E. Viklund, who owned the car from 1983 to 1992, in Sweden. It came to Finland in 1992 via Viklund’s Finnish colleague. In Finland, however, the Mercedes remained completely unused for the first 10 years, and in 2002 the car moved to another MB enthusiast’s collection, who carried out a new restoration on the car. The car’s current appearance and condition are largely thanks to the restoration that began in 2002; museum inspection and registration were completed in 05/2008.

Despite the twin headlights, this is not a US model.

Since 1983, this Mercedes has effectively only covered occasional hobby miles.

The engine is the original 2.2-litre inline six-cylinder (120 hp), equipped with a rare mechanical single-point injection system for its era, so rare that it is mentioned separately as “Einspritzmotor” for those following behind. The engine runs and pulls nicely, the drivetrain is quiet, and the brakes work well. The body sides are straight and the doors close like a safe. Of course, it should be remembered that despite the restoration, the car is 64 years old.

The only faults that come to mind are:

Charging is weak when the lights are switched on. Sometimes it cranks for longer; could changing the fuel filter help? Otherwise everything works well all round and the ride is smooth.
