Volvo XC70, 2003, Jyväskylä

Next in line. The car has a few faults.

• The instrument cluster is erratic — it was tinned once around 2010 but needs re-tinning, so the clock occasionally runs backwards and sometimes emits a beep. This mostly happens in summer and warm weather; in winter the clock keeps time and the cluster behaves. Usually on the first long acceleration it goes into fault mode ("engine requires service" message; no other warning light) if you aim for about 80–100 km/h. The VNT vanes stick and an overboost fault limits revs and power. This clears either by continuing to drive or by restarting. It typically happens once per driving cycle. You can prevent it by revving the engine appropriately before the first long acceleration so the VNT vanes start moving and the turbo doesn’t stay overboosted too long.

• Inspected in March with no remarks; before that brakes, three wheel bearings and the left handbrake cable were replaced. Otherwise in reasonable condition apart from the occasional limp-home mode — selling because I don’t need it. I also have an XC70, a V70 and a small runabout on the driveway, so one must go.

• Winter tyres are only “winter tyres” in name — I wouldn’t drive on them in a real winter. Summer tyres are a few years old Nokians and will manage the summer depending on mileage.

• Auxiliary driving light on the front for dark conditions; there is a cabin switch to turn the extra light off in rain/fog if needed.

• Equipment: the German previous owner seemed to have ticked almost everything available in 2003. Rear picnic table, armrest with storage and cupholders, integrated child seats and factory ISOFIX anchors fitted on both sides of the rear.

• Working dual-zone automatic climate control.

• Dem module repaired a few years ago and last winter the four-wheel drive worked (it moved well when needed on closed ground) and appears to work now; Haldex oil changed last summer.

• Includes engine block heater internal branch, maintenance charger and a programmable working parking heater. The parking heater is factory-fitted and I use it a few times a year, always at least 50 minutes so it’s properly warmed.

• Rain sensor, electric child locks, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, remote central locking with two keys. There is a towbar — I don’t know if towing a heavy trailer long-distance would help clean the turbo VNT vanes by burning off deposits; in normal solo driving the exhaust temperatures don’t reach high enough to do that.

• Service book photographed. Timing belt replaced at approximately 400,000 km in 2023 — it still has some life left. Routine maintenance has been done recently by me (oil changes and checks I can perform myself).

• First registration in Finland: 6 November 2009
