Volkswagen Golf Variant, 2003, Kotka

Golf on the defect list. Passed emissions even though the exhaust apparently leaks according to the inspector. A small brake issue and some rust spots that didn’t look severe to my eye. If those are attended to, it should be driveable for another year. It would be good to replace the timing belt, as the only record of the last change is an entry in the service book (H-book) from 2015.

Only one set of tyres and wheels — the studless tyres and steel rims currently fitted. Spare wheel included and jack. There has been a large subwoofer set in the boot and a second 12 V battery for the sub installed in the spare-wheel well. The hi‑fi gear has been removed, but the battery and an RCA cable from the head unit have been routed to the boot.

Other faults:

• Central locking works, but the buttons on the keys do not — I haven’t tried replacing the key batteries, so that may be the issue.

• Driver’s door has a handle issue — sometimes you need to pull a bit harder to open it. The interior handle works OK.

• Right after I took the subwoofer set out of the boot the lid worked fine, but while I was photographing it the boot would not open again, hence some poor pictures of the boot.

• Rust here and there and a hole in the left front sill. See photos!

• Also see the inspection sticker notes about brakes and the exhaust.

• Before the inspection the exhaust was patched on a very small budget using what was available in the garage, as it was leaking much more. Emissions still passed OK.

• Rear window wiper does not work.

• Air conditioning — blows fairly cool, so it appears to work. It may be worth servicing to ensure continued performance.
