Volkswagen Passat, 1998, Kuhmoinen

Passat for sale — a project I never found time for. It's a V6 Syncro. The car was parked for a long time with the previous owner due to the gearbox control unit. Before the unit failed, the rear subframe was replaced/refurbished (€300–€400), early rust spots were treated and an E85 flex-fuel kit was installed (~€500).

The interior developed mould while standing and cleaning has been started (two days wiping all visible areas with chlorine wipes), but work remains. My plan was next to shampoo all fabrics with an upholstery cleaner, then steam-treat, then ozone treatment and finally a ventilation-duct cleaning bomb.

Other faults:

- The alternator stopped working during storage.

- The air conditioning will almost certainly need recharging.

- The timing assembly should be replaced.

- Old E85 should be drained from the tank, as it now takes a long time to start.

- A basic scheduled service should also be carried out.

- The brakes might still be salvageable, but may require new discs and pads to pass inspection.

- The gearbox control unit has been replaced, but it likely requires coding, as it gives a fault code in the identification data after being without power which needs to be cleared (the code stays cleared until the battery is disconnected).

Spare parts included: at least a new undertray, the broken lower windscreen splash trim, an accessory belt & tensioner, a new ignition coil and spark plug leads, valve cover gasket set and the chains between the camshafts.

The brittle PCV lines were replaced with improved versions some years ago (around 2014) by myself.

It starts and can be moved forwards and backwards, but cannot be driven far because of the alternator.
