Ford S‑Max recently passed its annual inspection — a 7-seat family car.

The car is a 2008 model.

Sold because repairs would be too expensive for its age. After the inspection there began to be whining and chirping noises; a garage said the whining comes from the gearbox. Also the exhaust heat shield is slightly loose and knocks on the underside when starting or stopping the engine.

The winter tyres were renewed this winter, so they are new (tyres show last year’s inspection sticker).

They are studded tyres.

The summer tyres were replaced only a month ago — Atrezzo tyres. These are new.


There are a couple of rust spots on the right-hand side where the paint has come off. Also the right-hand rear door closes poorly and usually has to be slammed shut.

The exhaust shield has been tied to the underside with cords at another garage — I don’t know what they were thinking with that fix.


Otherwise it drives well! It’s a tall car with good visibility; the windscreen was replaced last December. The middle-row seats each slide on their own rails.

The seams on the front seats have started to split.

There is no Bluetooth, and I haven’t found an Aux socket even though the radio is labelled Aux.

One headlight is out — either the bulb failed quickly or there is an electrical fault in the other dipped beam.

The left wing mirror does not move; I cannot operate it from inside with the electric controls.


For repair or for parts — I hope to get as much as possible from this sale as it will help me buy a new car.

Defects and other observations

The car has a couple of times stopped responding to the accelerator during a journey (for example on the motorway), i.e. power was lost. I have just switched the engine off and restarted it, and it then works for a long time afterwards.

The rear panel is dented — I accidentally reversed into a post.

Mostly cosmetic damage; the inspector did not raise this as an issue.
