Mercedes 300CE AMG 10/1989

Do not confuse this with the modern fibreglass/plastic replica “AMG” Mercs — the parts on this car are genuine pre‑merger AMG parts fitted from new.

This car was sold new in Umeå, Sweden and received a full AMG conversion before first registration via the Swedish Mercedes importer/dealer Philipsson in April 1989. At the same time an AMG 3.0 158 kW KAT tuning kit was fitted to the engine. The car was displayed in the dealer showroom and sold to the first owner in October 1989.

There is rare documentary proof of the AMG conversion: an internal dealer AMG invoice (photographed) identified by VIN / registration JRT369. The AMG parts supplier on the receipt is likely A.S = AMG Sweden Zirkelbach AB.

The car comes with extensive documentation. All original documents are present from the first owner’s warranty certificate onwards. All keys (4), manuals, service book with main card and Mercedes dealer service/parts receipts up to approx. 160,000 km are included. The original Swedish registration plate is also kept (it had the original Swedish plates when imported to Finland). Much more is included (see photos).

The car stood unused in Sweden 2012–2020 and was imported to Finland in 2024 (first registration in Finland: 1 August 2024). I bought the car in autumn 2025 just after an MOT but requiring various work.

The car’s mechanicals are now in good condition; it was comprehensively serviced 2025–2026.

When purchasing I also acquired the original missing 17" AMG Aero I pre‑merger (no AMG stripes on the logo) wheels and fully refurbished them. The lips were lacquered after polishing and new Dunlop tyres matching the AMG receipt were fitted.

All lights have been renewed with Hella NOS parts.

AMG bumper fog lamp inserts have been renewed with original Bosch parts.

The interior includes a complete AMG burl wood set from new, AMG wood storage box, AMG “Hammer” steering wheel and AMG gear selector.

Externally it has the original AMG pre‑merger C124 body kit with a 3‑piece coupé rear spoiler. All wheel-arch edges were folded in when new and the front has AMG widening parts so the 17" AMG ET28 wheels fit.

The radio is a top‑of‑range Blaupunkt 1989–1990 model which unusually still has a working cassette. A new original Hirschmann aerial was fitted as the old one was badly stuck.

According to dealer receipts the standard camshaft and lifters were fitted at around 130,000 km; an AMG spec tuning cam (from another maker) could be sourced if desired. AMG parts have not been available new for decades, so the dealer replaced the worn camshaft with a standard item. Around the same time the rear and centre silencer were replaced at the same dealer with Mercedes original silencers.

The engine serial number matches the registration card; I believe the gearbox is also original.

Most of the original paint remains; no bodywork has been done while in Finland apart from washing. Some spot repairs were made by previous owners in Sweden (notably the driver’s door and the front of the right rear arch). The AMG body-kit paint shows the nearly 40 years of age. The body is very good for its age and shows almost no rust except around the jack lift hole at the rear right, which requires repair. The lift hole sits inside the sill extension and had built-up sand that eventually caused a fingertip-sized hole next to the jack point. Typical problem areas (front corners/washer reservoir area, rear axle mounts, taillight undersides, boot sides/floor, battery tray, front wing fronts) are all in excellent condition. The underside is very tidy and shows no repair-needing areas.

The car does not leak any fluids; after repairs the engine and gearbox have remained dry. The engine and gearbox operate well. It starts well cold or hot and produces no smoke. Drives well.

Everything except the air conditioning appears to work. The air conditioning has not been charged.

The value of the original pre‑merger AMG parts fitted to this car is high today. For example the coupé 3‑piece rear spoiler costs around €1,500, front and rear bumpers plus sills around €5,000, a good-condition AMG Hammer wheel around €2,000, refurbished wheels with tyres €3,000, etc. Coupe model parts are very rare and originals are seldom seen for sale. There are many replicas worldwide (sometimes even marked), but genuine items are scarce.

An attached list shows work done in the last year. Parts alone (excluding labour) cost approx. €8,000.

This is a proper, rare Merc for a new owner.
