Probably a rimfire black-powder walking-cane firearm, circa 1885.

Can it be called a pistol or a shotgun...?

No purchase permit required — an antique firearm; this specimen has been inspected by the authorities.

Not a pinfire weapon but likely a rimfire (see mechanism photos and judge for yourself). It was a modern, factory-made high‑tech weapon at the time of manufacture.

Fires black-powder cartridges.

Very little fired — perhaps only a few shots, long before the First World War.

Length about 85 cm and calibre approximately 8 mm (possibly around .32). Come and measure if exact calibre is important!
