Audi A6, 1999, Turku

A slightly different Audi seeking a new, caring home.

This is an A6 C5 with the V8 engine (wide-body) in beautiful original Audi Racing Green, complemented by a full RS6 body kit. Front bumper, rear bumper, grilles and sills with OEM numbers. These parts alone are worth more than the car. OEM RS6 badges for the grille and tailgate included.

Well equipped for its age:

• Dual-zone automatic air conditioning

• Cruise control

• Electric RECARO leather seats with heating.

• Rear parking sensors (front also has sensors in the bumper, no wiring)

• Trip computer

• Interior lighting pack

• Extended leather trim (door panels, S-line steering wheel with Tiptronic buttons, gear lever)

• Alarm

• Audi RNS-D multimedia player with navigation

The car has been repaired, serviced and upgraded extensively. The goal was to restore it to its original glory step by step. Not everything may be remembered but here are the most important items, not in chronological order:

• Timing belt with parts, water pump and serpentine belt January 2022

• Engine oil, oil filter, air filter and cabin air filter changed annually. Spark plugs changed 2023.

• Engine vacuum reservoirs and vacuum lines renewed while throttle flaps in the intake were made more sensitive.

• Inner drive shafts replaced at the rear.

• Front shock absorbers replaced. 2022

• Driveshaft balanced spring 2023; universal joint, carrier bearing and constant velocity joints replaced at the same time.

• Transmission oils changed twice while in my ownership. TransGon repair kit tried once without benefit. Forté transmission additive added.

• Brake discs and pads on all corners + right front caliper. Painted black.

• Front lamp housings sanded and resin-treated and projectors replaced with better Retrofitlab units. Xenon, high beam and indicators replaced with LEDs. Incredible light output!

• Reverse lights, licence plate lights and side indicators replaced with LEDs.

• Transmission control unit replaced.

• Air conditioning condenser replaced with the timing belt and A/C service performed with a single service port. The air blows very cold.

• Replaced with a vehicle-specific Android head unit with reversing camera, Android Auto, CarPlay and a dashcam with ADAS. Original unit included. Original unit has better sound, but the car isn’t driven for hi‑fi.

• Centre resonators removed, sound remains moderate.

• All interior bulbs changed to LEDs.

• Wood trim wrapped in carbon-look tape

• Windscreen replaced 2024

• Third brake light replaced with OEM

• Audi Flat-Five style thick-sided alloy wheels with summer tyres. Tyres still have good tread.

• Known cabin filter housing fault replaced with a new unit and sealed with PU glue to prevent water ingress.

• DVD player in glovebox and screens in headrests. These were working when I bought the car and can be connected to the Android unit.

• Vehicle supplied with mini licence plates

There’s probably more, but those are the main items.

The body has been given a completely new life too!

Rust in the body was removed and the right side sill panel replaced. The car was stripped down including doors and panels and painted inside the doors as well. Dents and imperfections straightened. An OEM-style rear window spoiler added. Painted in original LZ6H Audi Racing Green. The colour changes nicely in different light.

Windows professionally tinted and wind deflectors fitted. Easily removable as they are attached with double-sided tape.

I originally bought the car as a winter car and it served very well. It is now sold with summer tyres only.

The car looks almost new and turns heads. Many people have asked about it and noted these are rare.

Not everything is perfect, so there’s still a bit to do, but for someone who knows cars it’s not impossible:

• The coolant reservoir leaks from the return line joint; the adhesive isn’t holding and this model reservoir is a bit hard to source. I keep an eye on used parts. You’ll need to top up coolant occasionally.

• The aftermarket air mass meter improves drivability and responsiveness but sometimes triggers the traction/motor warning light; it usually goes out by itself or on the next start. The original unit is included, which removes the fault but makes the engine a bit less eager.

• When transmission fluid gets too hot it sometimes clunks on initial take-off in 1st and 2nd gears due to the clutch pack releasing and re-engaging briefly. Driven in winter that problem did not appear. In Tiptronic mode it’s barely noticeable at higher revs. A replacement spare valve body is included. There is much information on cracked valve bodies for this unit (ZF 5HP24) and the symptoms match. The same gearbox is used in Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Range Rover, so parts and knowledge are widely available. The spare valve body comes from a rear‑wheel‑drive BMW gearbox, so it isn’t a direct swap.

• After standing for a while a valve lifter may tick for a short while but stops as oil pressure builds. Thicker oils may cure this.

• No service book, but some service/repair paperwork in the glovebox.

In short: I reluctantly part with this car though you shouldn’t fall in love with metal. I don’t have time for it anymore with two other cars and a motorcycle.
