Rare Gustavian-style sofa – Taidesalonki Bäckbacka provenance MOH3513, Helsinki

For sale a very long (216 cm) and slender Gustavian-style wooden sofa. The sofa is beautifully decorated with turned spindles, stylised ball motifs and subtle carving. Pieces of this quality and in such good condition for a Gustavian interior are rarely available. The accompanying tag reads: "Gustavian sofa 1700, purchased 1966 Taidesalonki Bäckbacka, Bulevardi", giving the piece an interesting and valuable provenance.

Technical details and measurements:

• Length/Width: 216 cm

• Height: 99 cm (seat height 45 cm)

• Depth: 59 cm

• Material: Painted wood, seat upholstered in a pale floral-patterned fabric.

Condition:
Very good for its age and sturdy. The paint shows age-related crazing and patina, which suit the style. Upholstery is tidy and intact, with minor soiling consistent with the age. One corner ornament has a small damage (see close-up) but it is easily repairable.
