Volvo XC70, 2007, Porvoo

With a heavy heart I am selling my XC70: which I have owned for about three years, making room for a new car.

Swedish metal that has seen a fair bit of road in its life. During my ownership I have of course carried out some small repairs to keep the car on the road but that is to be expected with a nearly 20‑year‑old car :)

The car is stable on the road, tracks straight and does not rattle over bumps. The suspension has been gone through and is firm! The engine starts and runs very nicely, even smoother than many less driven examples. D5 lifters typically start to make noise over time if oil change intervals are stretched, but this engine sounds completely healthy.

I have changed the transmission oil a few times by flushing to keep it in good condition + the mileage counter was reset at the same time.

The Ardic auxiliary heater works as it should and has been a big bonus every winter. The unit itself was replaced with a used one a couple of years ago.

I converted the car to a van in 2023, see photos. It has been a convenient camper as a mattress fits neatly into the rear space so you can sleep on the road while travelling.

The rear seats can be refitted and the car can be easily converted back to a passenger car! Total tax now €388.72/year, previously it was nearly €900/year if I remember correctly.

In December 2025 the steering rack was replaced with a new one at once, the power steering pump (used), power steering fluids, accessory belt and tensioner, alternator freewheel pulley, rear engine mount, the support under the timing cover and the transmission torque arm were also replaced.

In winter the front propshaft was replaced with a factory‑reconditioned unit when the centre support bearing failed. While the propshaft was off the Haldex oil and filter were also changed. The four‑wheel drive therefore works as it should.
In 2023 the Haldex oil was probably changed for the first time ever and the pump was replaced at the same time because the original Haldex pump disintegrated when removed during the oil drain.

Various other small parts have been changed and repaired over the years, e.g. air conditioning evaporator + recharge, heater core, injectors for cylinders 1 and 5, and the injector wiring connectors were replaced when the original wires crumbled.

Windscreen replaced in autumn 2024.

The front brakes have been upgraded to parts from a 2007 Volvo XC90 D5, i.e. 336 mm diameter discs with large calipers. Note: the minimum wheel size for these is 17". The same calipers fit smaller 316 mm discs so 16" wheels would fit, but you would need the caliper brackets from a 2003–2006 XC90 and, of course, 316 mm discs.

The car currently runs all‑terrain tyres in size 225/65R17. These are not very aggressive for A/T tyres so consumption did not increase and tyre noise is fairly modest. They have been on the car 2.5 years and still have plenty of tread, I think over 10 mm. They also have the 3PMSF marking so are legal as winter tyres. I have typically driven well into winter with these and grip has been very good, though they do not replace proper winter tyres. Winter tyres are Bridgestone Blizzak DM‑V3 in 225/65R17. I have been very satisfied with these; they have been used two winters and are still in very good condition.

Under the spare wheel in the boot there is a Volvo factory subwoofer which I took from a donor car, but it is not connected because it requires the original wiring harness which I do not have.

Negatives include a few items, e.g. the reversing sensors do not work. As is typical with P2 Volvos the wiring to the rear bumper has chafed through and is grounding. The sensors may work intermittently on dry summer days.
The car also displays "Alarm system requires service". The alarm does work, but it shows this because the rear window was once replaced with a used glass that does not have the identification/heating wire after the previous owner reversed into a heating post in winter.

As is typical with 2005–2007 P2 Volvos rust has appeared under the side mouldings on the front doors and would need surface repair on both sides, especially the driver27s side.
The electric height adjustment for the driver27s seat does not work. Fore/aft and backrest adjustments work.

The spare key only opens the doors; it appears the immobiliser transponder is dead as the car will not attempt to start the engine with it. Everything works correctly with the main key!
