Schaeff ZL 4 is an old-school, sturdy wheeled machine built for hard work, not decoration. Its strengths are a heavy build, straightforward engineering and good serviceability. The machine represents an era when equipment was made to withstand use and wear. This hasn’t been CAD-modelled and panels haven’t been thinned for optimisation. It was made so the metal lasts.

The engine is a Deutz air-cooled diesel, an old-school legend. These have been used worldwide on fields, construction sites and elsewhere because they are known to run, to be loud and to last. There’s no unnecessary refinement — just simple, tough engineering made for work. A Deutz is not a whisper-quiet sophist; it’s the kind of engine you hear and know straight away that work is being done. The reputation is based on keeping machines running even where conditions are harsh.

This example has seen life and many jobs, but in recent years it has mainly been used for loading firewood. In winter it has pushed snow, loaded logs and in spring moved timber on the property and lifted trunks onto the log table. It has worked through summers and winters and the jobs have been done. Included as tools are nearly new forklift tines at the same price, so you’re not just buying the bare chassis.

This is about a 40-year-old work machine, so wear is to be expected. There is wear, some looseness here and there and repairs may be needed now or in the future, as is normal for a machine of this age. Oil seeps in places, the machine breathes and the engine can be heard from a distance. In other words: it is not an electric car or a Swiss wristwatch. But for a machine of this era these are characteristics rather than surprises, and buyers should be aware of that beforehand.

Despite that, there is still plenty of power. Lifting capacity is in the tonne range, and in practical work the machine has shown it still gets the job done rather than just being a memory. Direction change works easily forward and back, the brakes also seem to work, and a diesel heater has been added to ease use in cold weather. Oils and filters have been changed as needed, so it hasn’t been kept running on hope alone.

If you want a showpiece, it will need some cleaning, tidying and other care. But if you want an honest old work machine, this mainly needs a firm hand and a suitable driver at the controls.
