Subaru Impreza, 1995, Muurame

Now for sale: a genuine Impreza WRX STI ver. 2 from 1995, the year Subaru celebrated a double rally championship under Colin McRae.

This is the most powerful Impreza model and, combined with a 1,200 kg curb weight, the performance is assured.

I have owned the car for four years; I bought it from a friend with a gearbox fault and carried out very extensive servicing when I replaced the gearbox. For example, the differential was rebuilt by a professional, so the history is well documented. The car was originally imported from the UK and I have extensive receipts from that period; there are also receipts from when it was sold from Japan to the UK. The car has an aftermarket alarm with an integrated immobiliser and central locking.

When purchased it already had a BC Racing coilover kit and it is approved for modified inspection. It has a boost gauge that also shows oil temperature and pressure and an air–fuel ratio gauge; it also has a turbo timer.

Examples of maintenance carried out — the list is long so some items may be omitted.

- Air conditioning serviced and I only just realised it works and blows cold.

- Engine timing components and gaskets replaced at 244,203 km on 13 August 2023; for example, seals that are often left unchanged were replaced at both ends of the crankshaft.

- New lightweight Exedy flywheel 5.5 kg, Exedy clutch kit and a new clutch slave cylinder.

- Replaced left-hand mirror — the mounting had worn so it was loose. The mirror I ordered isn’t exactly the same as the right one (apparently a facelift mirror) but it works correctly. These JDM cars have electric mirror control so standard mirrors don't fit.

- Rear suspension carriers sandblasted and powder-coated and bushes replaced with urethane ones.

- 3-inch stainless exhaust with a race catalytic converter, M1 Motorsport stainless exhaust manifolds (good and expensive; remove a hot spot on cylinder four that can cause detonation) and the lambda sensor replaced.

Intake side fully restored — it had been tuned and was returned to original. New wastegate actuator and boost-solenoid fitted, plus a K&N washable air filter which I clean and oil about once a year.

- New fully aluminium radiator, no overheating — tested on track.

- Brakes overhauled: pads and discs replaced, calipers reconditioned, braided steel lines fitted, fluids changed last autumn.

- A couple of wheel bearings replaced.

- Driveshaft made from a Legacy 200 turbo driveshaft because the Impreza's flange was different and wouldn't fit the replacement rear. The original driveshaft comes with the car; it can be used if the flange is changed. The said Legacy also provided the rear differential and gearbox; transmission and differential oils have been changed twice during my ownership, most recently last autumn, using oils used by Subaru dealerships—so high quality.

- Engine oil and filter changed twice a year, last at the end of last year; power-steering fluid also changed several times, as well as coolant, brake fluid, clutch fluid, fuel filter etc — all done more often than necessary.

- Spark plugs and coils are new; plugs always NGK which work best in these, coils are performance-oriented (manufacturer unknown, made in Canada). Subarus commonly have weak spark under boost.

- New Walbro 255 l/h fuel pump so fuel supply won't run out.

- Two sets of tyres: studded winter tyres still in good condition, summer tyres bought last summer.

- Engine and gearbox mounts are stiff motorsport-style mounts; vibrations are not noticeable while driving and they greatly improved drivability.

Plus a lot of small routine tinkering I won't list — the car has been well maintained, so there are no knocks from the underside and the head gasket doesn't leak contrary to some myths about Subarus.

The paintwork could be better, but the body is in good condition and doesn't require work, which isn't a given on cars of this age from Japan.

The car is about 95% original, so if you have the enthusiasm it's not impossible to restore it to museum condition; parts are readily available, especially from the UK, and are not expensive.

Don't be put off by the kilometres: the car has been used as a daily all year and has been to Sweden — it runs like a clock when serviced on time.

The car is 31 years old, so there is wear, for example on the driver's seat, but overall it is in good condition for its age.

Passed MOT last October; the only note was a headlight aim adjustment on the left, otherwise it passed without remarks.
