No need to say much more — Hiace ready for a new home and work, so it won't have to sit at the dealer.

You'll also make friends when you buy one of these. Just drive to the local garage for a coffee, or mention you have capacity to carry things and towing power..

Equipment:

• The Webasto heater — and it works

• Air conditioning — blows cold enough that you might want a scarf

• Tow bar for even the trickiest boat launches or removal jobs

• Two sets of tyres; summer tyres even on alloy wheels

• Working radio

• That should cover most of the important bits!

Maintenance:

• Serviced annually by the previous owner at the same workshop. Due to the scope of the major services, not everything has been itemised — there is a general note that it has been serviced yearly.

  It has been kept in top shape as one would for their own vehicle or a mate's.

  Typically these only need oil changes. At least that's what Hiace people say!

Defects / Shortcomings:

• True Toyota fans don't really talk about faults, and I can't say for certain there are any.

  This unit only has one key, but there's probably a locksmith in every village who could cut a new one, even from wire.

• The windscreen is cracked — the MOT also flagged this; not sure how long it's been like that.

Test-drive notes:

• Well, it's a proper hello! The author was still in socks after the drive — in a good way.

• Imagine turning the key to the right and hearing the familiar Hiace start and clatter. Then first or second gear and you're pulling away. It's not so strict if you go into third either. Still goes and goes.

• I could sing its praises forever, but I might not be able to let it go if I did!
