Vehicle inspected at a workshop:

"The engine warning light was on on arrival and the car ran poorly

Error codes read:

P0300 – random/multiple cylinder misfires detected

P0302 – misfire detected in cylinder 2

P0303 – misfire detected in cylinder 3

P0175 – mixture (bank 2) too rich

• Ignition coils removed and spark plugs checked

The retaining clip of the 1 and 3 cylinder ignition coil connector was broken / repaired with a cable tie. A cable tie had previously been fitted to the cylinder 3 coil connector

Coils swapped and error codes cleared

- Coolant reservoir nearly empty / 1.5 litres of coolant added

No visible leak

- Test driven; still runs poorly at idle, but OK under revs

Smokes when driving / bubbles appear in the expansion tank and coolant overflows

Cylinder 3 still misfiring constantly at idle; head gasket leaking or head cracked. Without dismantling it is impossible to say whether it is only the head gasket or whether the cylinder head needs replacing if cracked."
