Here’s a rare treat for sale: an all-wheel-drive Volvo with a 5‑cylinder engine and relatively low mileage.

There are a few faults that may affect the purchase decision, so I’ll list them below.


Often these have a loose or leaking steering rack; in this case I don’t believe the rack is at fault, but the steering stiffens and tightens when turning. With full lock the resistance varies every 90 degrees.

The dash shows a warning that the stability control system requires service. Perhaps this is also why the AWD does not engage.

The brakes shudder mildly when braking.


Those are the main points to note.

Everything else is great — it feels excellent to drive. Cars with this kind of sound are rare at a reasonable price these days, and there’s plenty of torque.

The timing belt has just been replaced, along with the VVT units.

The start-up and running sound are clean and smooth. Check the service book; you can probably imagine the good engine note.


There’s no knocking from the chassis, the body doesn’t sag and it feels solid on the road; the only thing that spoils the feel is that odd sensation in the steering wheel. Small shudder in the brakes.


The drivetrain behaves as these usually do, except the AWD does not engage. Possibly a sensor issue since the car also warns about the stability control. The ABS light, however, is not illuminated.

The centre silencer on the exhaust appears to have been removed at some point, but it’s not a leaking pipe or otherwise annoyingly noisy — it sounds nice.


For someone who can work on cars this is an excellent car — once fixed up you’ll easily do another 300,000 km. Do take note of the service book — I don’t change oil as often as the record suggests.
