A piece of Finnish banking history: a MiniSyp ATM, estimated from the mid-1980s or earlier.

Cosmetically and internally in very good condition for its age, though it no longer contains real cash. Functionality has not been tested.

The ATM is heavy, estimated 1,000–1,500 kg. Height 199 cm, width 87 cm, depth 133 cm.


'Suomen Yhdyspankki Oy, known as SYP, opened the first real-time MiniSyp ATM in Tampere on 4 May 1978. In the same year SYP opened machines in Turku, Heinola, Pori and Varkaus. By spring 1980 there were already 49 MiniSyp machines, and by the end of 1981 the number reached 80. At that stage the machines handled 170,000 transactions per month.

 

MiniSyp machines were phased out in 1994. To trim an overly dense ATM network and centralise maintenance, banks formed a joint company in 1994 to manage cash-dispensing ATMs. The banking crisis in Finland expedited the cost-cutting.'
