A torque wrench is a precision measuring tool for setting tightening torque. It is designed to tighten threaded fastenings so that the applied force is known and matched to the material used and the strength of the bolt and nut. The torque wrench is especially suitable for automotive work and other situations where the manufacturer specifies the required tightening torque precisely.

The wrench uses a mechanical ratcheting "click" mechanism that audibly clicks when the set torque is reached. The torque scale is located in the handle and adjustment is made by turning the handle. Once the desired torque is set, the wrench is locked with a locking device at the end of the handle.
