The torque wrench is a precision instrument for setting torque. It is designed to tighten threaded joints so that the clamping force is known and matched to the material and the strength of the bolt and nut. The wrench is especially suitable for vehicle maintenance and other situations where the manufacturer specifies an exact tightening torque.

The wrench uses a mechanical click mechanism that gives an audible 'click' when the set torque is reached. The torque scale is in the handle and adjustment is made by turning the handle. Once the desired torque is set, the wrench is locked with the safety catch at the end of the handle.
